Recent Works Canfield's recent works often begin with a simple sketch of a single object or idea. As Kathy paints, the water and color create energy flows which guide her in transforming this minimal foundation into a fully-evolved work. In "The Sea" for example, the paint's fluidity, interacting with the initial arc, gave rise to a myriad of tiny shapes, elongated lines, and plant-like forms. Together they suggest the fertility of the sea without actually representing any specific thing. In contrast, "The Hive" addresses the other half of life's cycle. The hive's perfect form is threatened by an engulfing line of smoldering destruction. Canfield sees this metamorphosis as having its own beauty.
