"24 Hours," like "The Seasons," is concerned with the cycles of time. Here it is the day that is quartered, with midnight at the top and noon at the bottom. While the physical division of the panels reflects time as an artificial construct, the paintings reflect the reality of time's continuity. There is no morning, noon or night, but rather morning revealing noon becoming night. Time is no smooth thing, but rather a tangled landscape. Within the day's cycle, erupting colors suggest the pulsation of its energy.
