The Grid Series grew from class exercises in watercolor technique, each a structured examination of color intensity and dilution within an ordered grid. Kathy continued the series, creating paintings in which brilliant colors, sometimes almost chaotic in their intensity, are held together (or within) a rigid grid.

Though similar in concept, the paintings vary tremendously in effect. Number 21, for example, has a light-hearted tone suggesting flowers or fireworks, while in No. 18, a grid of similar tone is threatened by an emerging malignant presence. Grids No. 14 and No. 15 are dark with color, obliterating the calming boundaries of the white grid while retaining the hard edges. Shapes appear to be moving over the grid. The black of a fire's heart appears in grids No. 7 and No. 10, while in No. 28 the chaos of dark colors almost blots out the anchoring grid.
