Paintings in a series consist of related subject matter. Each is a work that stands alone and can be hung separately, or with others from the same series.

Kathy started the Union Series for a number of friends who were getting married. She later reconceived the paintings as an exploration of how the new arises from the union of two thoughts or ideas. Her interest in how differing points of view create conflict or synergy comes together in this series.

While every painting has two spheres, they are not always confined within the paper's boundaries. Color and the way in which paint is applied make each sphere separate and distinct from its partner, and each painting very different from the others. Some, like No. 4, are intense and dense with color, while others use paint more sparely while still implying dramatic events.

In each case, a third element, usually a line or curve, intersects or unites the spheres. Along this, the two shapes meld, interact and influence each other, creating a new unit that encompasses more than the initial elements. Some of the resulting images suggest cellular reproduction, while others might be seen as planets orbiting a translucent sun.
